Why Mention the Pious Predecessors?
Why do Muslims speak about the pious predecessors when the Qur’an already contains complete guidance? The answer lies in a profound spiritual truth found throughout our tradition: mentioning the righteous strengthens the heart and invites divine mercy. From the statement of Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah—“When the pious are mentioned, mercy descends”—to the insights of Imām al-Ghazālī, and even real historical moments where rain fell, hearts softened, and prayers were answered at the mention of the righteous, the Ummah has long recognized the transformative power of their stories.
These narratives are not additions to the Qur’an—they are the mirrors that reflect Qur’anic light into the human heart, showing us what faith, sincerity, sacrifice, and steadfastness look like when lived by real people. Mentioning the pious is a means of reviving our spiritual aspiration and reconnecting with the tradition that carried Islam through centuries.
